Method SendMail of object _Workbook failed

This week I had to help a relative with his computer (unfortunately the problem with having ICT-skills is that you can help with every small computer problem of n00bs).On his computer he uses an Excel-macro to fill in a competition-table and send that to the people who where on a built in list. This always worked until I moved him from Office 2000 to Office 2003.

Every time I tried to send an e-mail it stopped with the following error:

Run-time error '1004':
Method 'SendMail' of object '_Workbook' failed.

The annoying part of this error message is that is say’s nothing about why it doesn’t work, so I started Googling.

The possible solutions I found:

  • Check if you can send mail with your default mailclient
  • Check if your default mailclient is Outlook Express, Microsoft Outlook or another MAPI-compatible mailclient
  • Go to Start, All Programs, Program access and settings and set Outlook Express (or other client) as default
  • Go to Start, Control panel, Internet-options, Programs and set E-mail and Newsgroups to open with Outlook Express (or other client)

All of the above not working?

Well and here is the peculiar about this strange error, after some more Googling I found out that Excel 2000 looks for mail-clients in a different way than Excel 2003. Excel 2003 does everything by the registry and I could find a Knowledge Base on Microsoft their website describing what you had to check in your registry, after I fixed this everyhing worked!
